how to use a self propelled petrol lawnmower

I have a tecumseh lawnmower and am not sure how to use it it starts ok but do you have to hold the clutch in all the time i hold it down to start it but when i let go of it the lawnmower engine cuts out i have to hold the clutch down and pull the accelerator one is this how you are suppose to use it or will that burn the clutch out

Start it as you have been doing, open the throttle and release the clutch slowly. If this doesn't work, make sure nothing is jamming the mechanism and the brake is off.
